Quick Tip Video View & Apply Address Suggestions Existing Addresses When Entering a New Address Residential vs. Commercial Addresses Specifying Residential vs. Commercial Good To Know Use an Unverified Address with USPS

Dealing with a delayed or lost shipment due to an invalid Ship To address costs you time, money, and trust with your customers. Invalid addresses may also incorrectly cause upcharges when the address is incorrectly identified as residential vs. commercial. Fortunately, Postsale offers address suggestions to assist you with ensuring that the addresses associated with your shipments are correct.

Address suggestions can be viewed and applied to an address just about anywhere an address is entered in Postsale. For example:

  • Ship To addresses
  • Ship From/Origin addresses
  • Etc.

Let's explore how to view and apply address suggestions and how Postsale can help you correctly identify Ship To addresses as commercial or residential.

Quick Tip Video

We also have a Quick Tip video that covers the information in this help article.

View & Apply Address Suggestions

Existing Addresses

For this example, we will look at how to use address suggestions to check that the Ship To address is correct for a shipment prior to creating a label in the Dock. However, the same basic process is used any time you wish to view address suggestions for an address in Postsale.

  1. With a shipment selected in the Dock, expand the To Address section.

  2. Click inside of the Address Line 1 field.
A list of valid address suggestions based upon the currently entered address is displayed.

  3. Select the correct address from the list.
The full, correct address will be applied. (Street, City, State, Zip, Country)

Manually Update the Address

If you wish to manually type a correction and not select from the list of address suggestions:

  1. Type the correction into the Address Line 1 field.
  2. Select your corrected address from the bottom of the list of suggested addresses to apply it.

When Entering a New Address

For this example, we will explore how to use address suggestions to check that the Ship To address is correct for an order that you are manually entering into Postsale. However, the same basic process is used any time you enter an address in Postsale.

  1. Begin typing the street address into the Address Line 1 field.
As you type, a list of valid addresses will be updated and displayed.

  2. Select the correct address from the list.
The full, correct address will be applied. (Street, City, State, Zip, Country)

Manually Enter the Address

If you wish to manually enter the address, such as when the address is not available in the list:

  1. Type the street address into the Address Line 1 field.
  2. Select the address from the bottom of the list of suggested addresses to apply it.
  3. Complete the Address Line 2, City, State, Zip, and Country fields.

Residential vs. Commercial Addresses

Specifying Residential vs. Commercial

Postsale can assist you with avoiding costly upcharges by helping to determine whether a Ship To address is a commercial or residential address.

Here's how:

  1. Follow the steps above to use address suggestions to help ensure that the Ship To address is correct.
  2. With a shipment selected in the Dock, expand the To Address section.

  3. Select Using Address Validation from the Residential (Domestic Only) drop-down menu.
  • With this option selected:
    • The Ship To address is validated and the correct option is selected for you.
    • Either Commercial or Residential is displayed in parenthesis to indicate the selection.

  1.  Optionally, you can manually select Yes or No from the Residential drop-down menu.
  • Yes = Residential
  • No = Commercial

Good To Know

  • Postsale does its best to correctly suggest whether an address is a commercial or residential. However, some shipping carriers may categorize the address differently than indicated by Postsale. Always check with the shipping carrier you are shipping with to verify the correct classification any time you are unsure.
  • Residential vs. commercial address suggestions are only available for domestic Ship To addresses.

Use an Unverified Address with USPS

In some instances, USPS may return an error that the shipping label cannot be created because the Ship To address could not be validated. Postsale offers a workaround for this so that you can create the label when this occurs.

Check with your Customer

Before using the Use Unverified Address option described below, we suggest that you reach out to your customer to verify the Ship To address is correct and to double-check that the address is entered into Postsale correctly. This will help to avoid the cost of shipping a package that is undeliverable.

If you encounter this issue and are sure that the Ship To address in Postsale is correct:

  1. Select the shipment in the Dock.
  2. Expand the To Address section.
  3. Check the Use Unverified Address (USPS Only) checkbox.
  4. Create the label.
